Pub ruins local | peace. Dear Editor: In reference to your article in a recent edition of the News, regar- ding the extended licensing hours of Sailor Hagar’s Pub, | am ap- palled by the comments made by Ald. Ralph Hall. He may feel that the extension to midnight is not ‘ta drastic move’’ and that getting reactions from resident owners in the area is “unfair,”’ but, he does not have to live with a pub on his street. It is a funny thing about pub patrons, they seem unable to °., their farewells inside the pub, they must shout greetings from across the strect, as they get in their cars. They all seem to have faulty door latches, since all car doors are slammed. They then rev up their engines and race away, honking final farewells to friends. With the present closing time of 11 p.m., this noise has gone on un- til 11:45 p.m. (you have to allow them iime to ‘sup-up’ their last pint). With the proposed extension to midnight, I can look forward to this racket continuing to 12:45 a.m., seven days a week, So, thanks a lot, Ald. Hail, your concern is ruining the neighborhood. Perhaps Ald. Hall or the owner of Sailor Hagars would like to buy my condo — then they can enjoy ‘their neighborhood pub’. J. Hallett North Vancouver GOV'T DOESN'T SUFFER FOOLS GLADLY South Africa strikes back concerned groups, it becomes clear that a group of biased and un- thinking busy bodies were given a very Dear Editor: For all its shortcomings and ex- cesses, the South African gov- ernment doesn't suffer fools glad- ly. Raiding African National Con- gress (ANC) headquarters in three different countries with total suc- cess and absolute impunity once again illustrates that the ANC is litle more than a disorganized would-be milit: ristic group that in effect lacks the ability tou as much as make a stand against the Johannesburg fire brigade. According to negotiators selected by Commonwealth coun- tries ‘o arrange a South African peace, this vocal rabble of op- timists should be allowed to operate freely inside South Africa and their leader, Nelson Mandela, must be relsased from prison to lead them. As a form of induce- ment to the Botha administration, the negotiators offer a truce by the ANC, My regret is onty that Canada had a representative among that group of negotiators. | can think of no body of advisors in. recent history who offered such super- ficial and ill-considered advice in a serious confrontation, Would Canada as much as listen to a pro- posed truce emanating from a band of terroristic murderers? To further complicate the issues, both Winnie and Nelson Mandela were granted an award by three of the ‘‘impartial’’ negotiators in recognition of their services to third world countries. It’s difficult to imagine the nature of those services although Nelson Mandela founded and operated an explosives factory at Rivonua where armaments were secretly made and if nothing else, Winnie Mandela has made the burning tire necklace a household name.
