ind Sets in place NINE national finalists in this year’s Canadian Music Competitions (CMC) will be perform- ing in concert at the UBC Recital Hall this Sunday at 2 p.m. Past CMC winners who have gone on to illustrious carcers in music include Corey Cerovsck, " Angela ‘Cheng, Li Liona Boyd, Ofra Harnoy and North Van-raised violinist Gwen Hoebig and her cellist brother Desmond Hoebig. Sunday’s concert includes performances by three young talents from the North Shore: 10-year-old violinist Jac-Won Bang and 17-year-old pianist Fiona Yamashita, both of North Vancouver, and 18-year-old pianist So Takei. Bang will perform Saint Satns’ Havanaise, Yamashita, Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsody and Takei, Balakirev’s Islamey. Next year is CMC’s 40th at showcasing y young musi- cians ages seven to 25 in piano, string, winds and voice. Tickets are just $10. A very few remain. Purchase them at Tom Lee Music on Granville Street, 685-8471. oe Portrait artist Elizabeth Smily’s career spans six decades but it’s her recent works that will be in the spotlight Tuesday when the West Van painter opens her show at West Van's Ferry Building Gallery. Early in her career, in 1950s England, Smily, who was then known as “Miss Wolf,” painted Marlene Dietrich and James Stewart. Subsequent portrait subjects include a war heroine, a Nigerian king and England’s Queen Mother.. Those famous faces won't be on display in the little gallery near the 14th Street pier. (Smily no longer has them in her possession.) The exhibition show- cases fainous faces of a more local nature: West Van mayor Pat Boname, and artists Ian Rowles and Daniel Izzard among them. In Spider Dan (Whitecap Books, $14.95), the 42- year-old musician spins the tale of a sensitive spider who turns vegetarian when he can’t stomach the thought of eating his friends.
