Breathe Underwater, 1996

This surprisingly polished and
complex debut independent release
from three local musicians is over
all too soon at just eight tracks.

North Vancouver's Dino
DiNicolo formed Breathe
Underwater with Jon Roper and
Frank Baker in 1993.

DiNicolo (bass, vocals and har-
monica) and Baker (drums and
percussion) earlier worked togeth-
er to provide the rhythmic anchor
for Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

The immediate appeal of this
incarnation strikes on a track like
Toxic, a riff thicket of funkified
gestures and jazzy breaks.

tracks shouidn’t have had legs.
We're asked to embrace everything
from Argentina's New Song
Movement leading light Mercedes
Sosa to Vox, an Anglo-German-
Lebanese group, and still leave
room in our heads for the intoxi-
cating Sufi singer Nusrat Fateh Ali
Khan,

Although the tracks are
extremely eclectic in scope, com-
mon ground is found in the disc
title’s operative concept of trance.
Varied in expression, each song
carries a little jewel of truth and
beauty upon which we are invited

This German project has ways
of making you swivel bits of your
body about.

Potentially unseemly conse-

your flinging about. These are

A nice tension is created by
combining emotionally cool,
robotic Euro-pop with Melanie
Thornton's soulful voice.
