SINCE MOST of the Lincoln
Continental’s competitors
offer V8 engines, it’s not sur-
prising that the new 1995
Continental has switched
from a V6 toa V8 engine.
The redesigned Continental now
offers the same 260 horsepower,
dual overhead cum, 32 valve V8
engine as the Mark VIL} coupe — a
high-revving powerplant with a
whopping 62% more horsepower

than the previous 3.8-litre V6 engine
which powered Continentals since
1988. [n addition, the new VS fea
tures platinum-tipped spark plugs
that last 160,000 kilometres (99,200
niles) and a “Home Safe” mode that
keeps the engine running should the
car's complex electronics go wrong
(an unhiely event, says Lincoln).

As before, the engine is mounted
tiinsversely and drives the front
wheels. The new Continental is the
first V8-powered, front-wheel-drive
car Lincoln has ever offered, Along
with the new engine, the redesigned
Continental has sleeker styling, a
new interior, increased noise insula-
tion, and more comfort and conve-
nience features,

The new Continental is roughly
the sume size as the previous model,
but is much more streamlined.
Lincoln styling engineers have
ditched the conservative Town Cur
school of luxury and opted for a
moder, more youthful image. Its
stoping, aerodynamic nose and flow-
ing roofline contrasts sharply with
the upright nose and almost-vertical
rear window of the previous model.

“This contemporary sedan offers quick,
sure-footed handling or the luxurious
ride of a limousine.”

Distinguishing styling features
include a chromed grille, wrap-
around reflector headlamps with
built-in comering lamps, full-width
rear talamps, 16-inch radials,
chromed alloy wheels, and an
unusual depression in the side body
panels.

The Continental's interior is also
new, highlighted by extensive use of
leather upholstery, tasteful use of
wood trim, new, casy-to-tise radio
and climate control buttons, and
seating for five or six passengers,
depending on which type of front
seats you want, The most interesting
new interior feature is a dashboard
menu display that allows iwo differ-
ent drivers to program their prefer-
ences for ride comfon, steering
effort, and radio stations. Drivers can
select steering effort that is Firm,
Normal, or Soft, and suspension set-
tings Firm, Normnal or Plush. I pre-
ferred the Normal steering effort and
Firm suspension settings for the best
combination of ride, handling and
