School Chess Festi- val will be held Saturday, Sept. 26, at the North Mall of the Park Royal Shopping Centre in West Vancouver. The festival will feature three competitions: Primary (grades i- 3), Intermediate (grades 4-7) and Secondary (grades 8-i2). There will be prizes for best school team (of four) as well as. individual winner and runner-up in each sec- tion. The event is co-sponsored by - the Cenire’s merchants and the B.C. Chess Federation. Entry fee for all sections is $4. Registration for competition takes place at the Centre between 8:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. on Sept. 26. Players should bring their own. chess sets if possible (boards wili be provided). A parallel event — the B.C. In- ternational Youth Chess Cham- pionships — will be going on at the same site and time. The com- petition could be of interest to parents and teachers who are in- terested in the potential for ‘chess ’ for youngsters. . Invitations have gone out to the province’s strongest players to compete in the Junior (under 19), Cadet (under 15),.and Under-Nine B.C. charnpionships. The winner of the Junior and Cadet categories will be flown back East to play in the Canadian Ciosed Championsips at Christmas (junior) and in Febru- ary (cadet). The winner of the B.C. under- nine group will be under strong consideration for the honor of representing Canada in the World Under-Ten championships, to be held in Czechoslovakia in the summer of 1993. “‘Numericaily, chess’ in B.C. is quite inodest,’” said event organizer Harold Daykin. ‘At our peak last spring, 550 were involv- ed in an annual grade-by-grade competition (grades one through 12) ‘kid ” Quebec has over 15,000 students involved in their chess programs, while New Brunswick boasts over 20,000. ‘*However, quality-wise, our youngsters are doing very well,’ observed Daykin. ‘*For both 1992 and 1991, in the anaual @anan- da-wide school-grade champion- ships held in May, B.C. came in second to a strong Quebec field. THERRIEN has been elected the 35th presi- dent of the North Shore - Secondary Schools’ Athletic Association at the associa- tion’s annual general meeting, succeeding outgo- ing--president- Tom. Rippon of West Vancouver Senior Secondary. ; Therrien, a teacher and coach at Argyle — Secondary since 1982, has coached rugby, basketball, voleyball, golf, tennis, and track and field over the years.
