The horror. Full-contact curling From page 14 Let us not lament, but savor the extra time we have to brush up on hockey history, visit local rinks, watch AHL games on TV, quiz our sports knowledge, review volumes one through six of Don Cherry’s Rock ‘em Sock ‘em videos, and my personal favorite, visit shut-ins and hospital patients with a mini-theatri- cal version of Hockey Night in Canada’s Coach's Corner — corn- piete with reasonable facsimiles of Cherry and straightman Ron MacLean. And folks, let’s just count our blessings. I think we all know that local bookstores weren't always jam- packed with the wonderful selection of hockey-related material they now carry. It wasn’t too long ago that those very same bountiful shelves sported everything you always wanted to know about football, baseball, curl- ing, gymnastics and tennis. But, only a pathetic puny token pamphlet or two on hockey. So come on fans, rejoice. There are books to read. Videos to watch. Cards to trade. Limited- edition prints to collect. Memorabilia to organize. Calendars to buy. Statistics to memorize. And memo- ries to savor. But the best, and by far the most self-indulgent way to help you through this difficult time is to visit the new Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. Oh, it is a thing of beauty. Once you're in, you don’t want to ever come out. You will walk through a pictorial history of the game; see a collection of artfully and meaningfully decorat- ed goalie masks, and practice your play-by-play announcing in the TSN mock broadcast booth. The archetyp- al voice of Foster Hewett can be heard broadcasting an original six playoff game (Montreal and Boston, { think) through an old-time radio. And of course, there is the trophy room, complete with the original Stanley Cup. Tae, Fi night in Canada? Of course, we'd rather be watch- ing the game that thrills the specta- tors, entices the young, welcomes the aged, comforts the sick, soothes the pained, and welcomes all.
