SKIPPING — FOR some high schooi students, it's not
a game. It's a way of life. For one Grade 8 boy in
Alberta, it meant more than five weeks in the slammer.
He was released Tuesday from a young offenders centre
after being jailed for violating a court order to attend
school. The boy missed three-quarters of the 1991-92

school year, because he said older youths were bullying
him. Some schoo! officials say jail is an effective way to
deal with a high drop-out rate, because it will discourage
other students from ‘missing school. Others say the
school system is failing to address the realities students
today face.

Insurance Corp. of B.C. (ICBC)
to more than 100 B.C. schools.

nality, complexity and attention to
planning as well as the degree of

The award-winning schools witt
receive between $100 and $500,
which will be used to help support
their ongoing efforts to encourage
traffic safety in their communities.
