While I do not believe in censorship | feel that if you are going to print statements such as, ‘‘Someone ought to cut dear Georgie boy (Georges Erasmus) off at his knees, or perhaps at the neck. Along with that sweetie-pie Ellen Gabriel,”’ or, ‘‘they applaud those who spit in Craada’s face while sucking hard on Canada’s tit,”’ then you had better leave room for public response. After experiencing the sense of shame and the loss of ‘‘national’’ innocence when whites were televised throwing rocks at fleeing, unarmed native Indians. | thought that all of the ‘good’? Canadians would rise up and demand an end to this madness. Pretty naive, ch? But what about equal rights? Dear Editor: I enjoyed reading about Fatima Karsan, an Ismaili Moslem who talked about her religion in Spiritually Speaking on Aug. 19. There is much that is admirable about the Islamic religion; howev- er, | felt that Barbara Black had not asked a certain important question, perhaps because she decided it was more discreet not to do so. : According to a debate recently featured in The Globe and Mail, Moslem women (even those over 21) are not autonomous, but must acquiesce to having their lives directed and arranged by a male relative. It would have been inter- esting to learn of Miss Karsan’s views on this phenomenon. It would also have been inter- esting to learn how this practice ELS Ge The sad part is, this could have been stopped before it started. Now the evil deeds of both sides have created a wound that could fester for years, I do thank Norm Severud for one thing. He is correct in saying that we are all responsible for our own situations and conditions and only we can change them. I believe that the road to change involves honest, open communica- tion, non-violent action, and community involvement. Thank you, Norm, for getting me angry enough to get involved. Sherri Boulet Vancouver P.S.: Norm, you would do your paper a service if you used all that negative energy and turned it towards more positive solutions. Your brand of angry, ‘‘bar-room, last call — ‘I can solve all of the world’s problems’ "’ cynicism, is easy. Challenge yourself and see if you can really write. would be dealt with under Section 15 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, which guarantees the equality of the sexes in ALL areas. Before my curiosity is fallaciously described as racism, may I add that I have a similar curiosity regarding the Roman Catholic Church. How would this church’s refusal to allow women to practise as priests be dealt with under the Charter, should a woman file a complaint with the Human Rights Commission? An article on the problem of religious tradition versus women’s guaranteed equality rights, together with a legal opinion on the probable outcome of a court case, would be most interesting. Jancis M.
