NV school district pleased with health board progress NORTH VANCOUVER School Board members were pleased to hear of the progress being made with the North Shore Union Board of Health. By MAUREEN CURTIS Contributing Writer “It seems like you’ve done a lot to really turn things around,’’ ac- ting board chairman Roy Dungee told Dr. Brian O’Connor, the local medical health officer, at a recent meeting, O’Connor reported on the pro- vincial government’s decision, after years of complaints, to work towards a better funding formula of the union board of health over a five year period. This year the provincial gov- ernment is contributing an extra $1.1 million to the board of health, which could translate to a savings of about $113,000 for North Van- couver School District. “There are two flaws still out- Standing: the exclusion of mental health funding for young adults and the exclusion of school health programs,’’ said O’Connor. O’Connor was also very positive about plans to consolidate the four health department offices on the North Shore to one office on Esplanade in North Vancouver Ci- ty. The North Shore Health Department will have two floors in the new six-storey building planned for completion in the spring or summer of 1990. “This will really improve the morale withia the North Shore Hea'th Deprctment,’’ said O’Con- nor. He denied some concerns that the department is ‘‘pulling out of West Vancouver.”’ “Much of our work is done off site anyway. In West Vancouver we will continue to operate out of church halls and similar loca- tions,”’ said O’Connor. Responding to compliments on his progress with the Health Department, O’Connor said he was merely “facilitating a good staff.” O'Connor pointed to two significant projects the department has been looking at: the first being the formation of a joint committee of representatives from the health department and the North Van- couver School District; the second being the creation of a community health promotion program to look at changing the way health department services are provided. WEST VANCOUVER $3.3m wiring project approved THE NECESSARY bylaws and arrangements for a $3.3 million underground wiring project in Ambleside were approved at Mon- day night’s West Vancouver District Council meeting. “This is the culmination of 2 lot of people’s work and the first ma- jor underground wiring project that West Vancouver has ever seen,’’ remarked Ald. Rod Day. The area involved includes six blocks of Marine Drive and sur- rounding paris of Bellevue, Clyde and Duchess avenues and nearby Streets. Although, according to Ald. Mark Sager, support for the un- derground wiring has been virtual- ly unanimous at meetings that have been held with local merchants, they still have a 30-day period in which to quash the wiring bylaw. Two specified areas were created for the $3,270,000 project. But grants from B.C. Hydro, B.C.
