Since garly July, eight people, participating in a landscaping and gardening program developed under the auspices of the North Shore Canadian Menta) Health Association, have planted and nourished, clipped and cajoled colorful new growth from the ne- glected gardens. Employment and Immigration Canada provided $100,000 funding for the Canora Landscaping pro- ject. ; Canadian Park and Tilford Distilleries Ltd. through its West Coast agent, Hyland Turnkey, provided a uniquely challenging testing ground to hone gardening skills at the Park and Tilford loca- tion, Classroom theory on everything from propagation and pruning to the correct use of power tools culminated with the students tak- ing the B.C. Pesticide exams in June. The Colonnade, Rhododendron, Oriental, Native Wood, Rose, and Herb gardens and green house are once again blooming with color and full of healthy green growth — a quiet place for tranquil reflection resurrected. A first for the North Shore, the training program was developed by project manager Beverly Weber and Capilano College instructor Dr. Les Koskitalo with instruction assistance provided by Karin Tig- ges and program assistant Filly Cyr. The program included sections on landscape growing media and fertilizers, plant identification, safety, cost estimates, turf installation and maintenance, landscaping con- struction, job readiness training and employee-employer rights and responsibilities.
