Simple light designs

BATHROOM remodelling is one
of the most popular fall home im-
provement activities.

But whether the project involves
complete modernization or simple
redecoration, one inexpensive, yet
effective technique is often
overlooked: Decorating with light.

The right lighting displays a new
bathroom at its best and also adds
to its safety and convenience.

A favorite bathroom project is
replacement of an old medicine
cabinet with a modern vanity unit
and larger mirror. You can com-
plement this arrangement and
create a dramatic lighting effect,
by constructing a simple fluores-
cent canopy over the mirror:

I. Make sure there is at least a
12 in. space between the top of the
mirror and the ceiling; 15 to 16 in.
is preferable.

2. Use 1x4’s to build a frame
that runs the length of the new
mirror. Inside dimensions should
be 12 to 18 in. wide by the length
of the mirror.

3. Apply quarter-round
moldings to inside the bottom edge
of the frame to support the dif-
fuser or lens. Clear acrylic lenses
or white diffusers work best since
they do not yellow with age.

Buy these in 2x4 ft. strips from
hardware stores and cut to size.

4. Paint the inside of the frame
matte white to reflect light. Paint,
stain or cover the exterior to blend
with the room decor.

5. Mount the frame in an ap-
propriate manner on the wall
directly over the mirror. The
assembly will be more secure if one
end butts against, and is fastened
to, an adjacent wall. Make sure
that the electrical wiring remains
accessible.

6. Install two rows of fluores-
cent strips or channels to fit the in-
side length of the canopy. Mount
these fixtures on the inside surfaces
of the front and back of the frame.
Equip with Muorescent tubes.

In fact, converting all bathroom
fixtures to Muorescent ‘will improve
the room's lighting and = reduce
electricity costs. When replacing
existing side-mirror fixtures, use
two-foot 20-watt tubes and white
acrylic diffusers.

For surface-mounted — ceiling
lights, select new fluorescent. fix-
tures that match the style of the
room and equip them with tubes of
appropriate length.
