Mailbox PARKING Dear Editor: lam a handicapped person, recovering from a crippling stroke. T have fought an overwhelming batle for many months to recover sufficiently to be in- dependent, an enviable state that most people take for % granted. “handicapped parking’ Now that Iam once again licenced to drive my car, is of absolute necessity to me. All too often when | go to shopping centres, the “handicapped parking’ is occupied by vehicles not displaying the insignia required on vehicles operated by handicapped persons. ! am appalled that anyone would be so incon- TOILET PAPER ON BEACH Reader rails at D. Cove OPEN LETTER TO CAPT. RICHARD OLIPHANT, HARBOUR MASTER, VANCOUVER PORT CORP. 1 would like to bring your atten- tion to the matter of pleasure craft illegally mooring and anchoring overnight at Deep Cove in North Vancouver. The problem is that, because few if any of the boats have holding tanks, there is a continual problem of fouled public land at Deep Cove. As you may know, the beach there is a popular swimming area for children and adults. Occasionally, [I've seen toilet paper floating in the water by the beach. It’s a disgusting situation and wholly unnecessary because mooring overnight mooring and anchoring is supposedly not allowed. | have complained to the harbor police. They have kindly respond- ed, but apparently take no action against the boaters beyond a warn- ing. Some yachts stay for more than a week — for free — fouling the public beach. I'm sure a few stiff fines would be a deterrent. Word will get out to the boating community that they can't snub the law this way. At very least a strongly worded sign to boaters is in order, There simply isn’t enough natu- ral flushing action in the water at Deep Cove to stand even one or two scoff-law boaters having their way. Shopping centre ad- ministration, while sympathetic, does not scem inclin- ed to enforce their own parking regulations. ! am appealing to you, the concerned public for your assistanve. If you see someone violating the “handicapped parking’, speak up. Perhaps embar- rassment will encourage these people to be more con- siderate.
