BROADWAY BRIGHT — for functional fighting with a fouch of glam- or, try a popular lighting idea taken from the theatre dressing rooms. The effect is easily achieved with exposed bulbs mounted on special strips. Light up your new bathroom LIGHT remodelling is one of the easiest and most effective ways to enhance your bathroom without going to a great deal of expense or effort. Tt can create a variety of moods — from funetional to cozy and comfortable. ' Bathrooms require both ‘general’ and ‘ttask’' lighting. General lighting is background light that reduces bright contrasts between activity and surrounding areas, Task lighting is the light needed for activities, suck as applying make-up or shaving. ADVICE FROM AN EXPERT The following suggestions from General Electric’s Residential Lighting Specialist, Nancy Christensen, can help you brighten your bathrooms: e Large bathrooms, over 75 square feet, need a moderate-to- high level light source in a ceiling fixture in addition to lights around the mirror. For an average or smaller room, mirror lighting often provides enough light. * There are a number of dif- ferent ways to use mirror lighting — try experimenting a little for the best effect. One popular choice is an idea taken from theatrical dressing rooms. Mount strips, with four to six exposed white globe-shaped bulbs per strip, across the top and down the sides of each mirror. Strips should ne 30 inches apart with 15- to 25- watt bulbs. © With a small mirror, a set of three lighting fixtures also works well. Combine a ceiling fixture over the front edge of the sink or counter with two lights. one on either side of the mirror, centred 60 inches above the floor (the average cheek height) and 30 in- ches apart. ® When placing lights, ury to eliminate shadows, which can in- terfere with applying make-up or fixing hair. A light colored sink and countertop will also. reflect light upward under chins — mak- ing shaving easier for men. © One excellent lighting option that few people use in the bathroom, is a dimmer in the wall switch to adjust light levels. For instance, maximum intensity light is used for grooming while lower levels during the night can help case the adjustment to electri¢ light. * A separate tub or shower compartment might need addi- tional light. Installing a recessed vapor-proof fixture designed for this application will illuminate and provide greater safety in these ureas. Be sure the switch is located out of reach from tub or shower, and check local building and electrical codes to see which type of fixture is allowed. ¢ Finally, a small low-wattage night light in the bathroom, is a good idea. These help make the path to the most frequently visited room in the house safer and more visible.
