N. VAN GATHERING EXPLORES EXPO’S REAL MANDATE

AN INTERNATIONAL conference scheduled for July 5 at
North Vancouver's Centennial Theatre will attempt to ex-
plore what its organizers say is Expo 86’s real mandate.

In Touch is expected to attract
about 700 delegates from all over
the world to a celebration of inter-
national communication
technology and technique.

“We decided to put this thing on
because Expo is really not doing
the job it set out to do,"’ con-
ference organizer Dale Maranda
said Friday. ‘‘Expo is a good car-
nival, but it was originally suppos-
ed to be about communication,
and you really have to go a long
way to find anything dealing with
communication at Expo."

Maranda said In Touch would
showcase human communication
as the key to breaking down bar-
tiers of politicat and social misun-
derstanding between peoples and
nations.

up with Jn Touch delegates in the
USSR, Korea and South Africa,
who will discuss responsible uses
of high technology communica-
tions.

Principal speakers scheduled to
appear at the conference's North
Vancouver headquarters include
consultant and author Dr. Michael
Durst; United Nations environ-
ment program advisor and film
maker Dr. Rashmir Mayur, who is
also an advisor to the governments
of India, Costa Rica and Surinam;
former personal assistant to Mar-
shall McLuhan and White House
speech writer Dr. Tom Cooper;
and East-West international rela-
tions advisor Bruce Allyn.

Maranda said Valdimir Pozner,
one of the USSR’s main pro-
pagandists, will be beamed into the
conference via satellite.

tn Touch, according to Maran-
da, is aimed at breaking down
defences and misconceptions tat
he says are cultivated in the medias
and propogandas of East and
West.

“We believe that so many of the
problems facing international rela-
tions are caused by a simple lack
of understanding between people.
So this conference has been set up
to explore the deeper arid reat
responsibilities of communica-
tions.”

Maranda added that modern
communication technology, if used
responsibly, will open the door to
a new and lasting international
understanding between nations and
ideologies.

In Touch is scheduled to run
from 1:30 to 5 p.m. Saturday.
