Friedinan says the most extreme eating disorder is anorexia, which affects about two per cent of women. This condition is where food intake is controlled and star- vation is the result. “We don’t control an eating disorder,’ says Friedman. “We look at a way of coping. We need to look at what goes on underneath.” Friedman says she uses a three- step approach in helping. women who suffer from ang’ eating GREAT OUTDOORS disorder. The first step is to help women rid themselves of negative feclings. “When a woman starts to recognize that what she’s doing is a form of coping, she'll take steps to change,’’ Friedman says. The second step is to encourage women to get on with their lives, such as to find a job, she explains. And the third step, which is also the most difficult, is to examine why an eating disorder was trig- gered, Friedman says. ‘“‘The common reason behind bulimia is that we live in a society that makes a lot of demands on women, especially young women. They're taught they have to be perfect and thin at the same time.” For more information call Friedman at 731-8752 or Maranda at 736-7180. st ae Our entire stock of X-Cski equipment at our cost or less!
