Last week members of North Vancouver city fire. department instructed hospital employees in fire and other emergency pro- cedures. On the weekend that knowledge proved useful in a real fire emergency. Firefighters were called to the hospital Saturday at 8:35 p.m. with-reports of a fire in room 710: Insp. Dave Burgess said the blaze began when an air conditioning unit in the room: shorted out. Drapes and a full.linen cart were too close to the air conditioner, causing a heat buildup, Burgess said. The unit shorted out and ‘‘arced’’ setting fire to the linen and drapes. — A patient in the room notified nurses who put into effect the theory they had learned just a few days earlier. Burgess said the nurses must be commended for the orderly way they got patients. out of danger and the effi- cient way the fire was at- tacked. Upon arrival, firefighters finished extinguishing the fire. North Vancouver District and West Vancouver firefighters also attended the fire which caused about $3,000 damage. THE BATTLE of the Century Apartments has claimed another two victims. Management of the 102- suite building at 250 East 15th were both fired last week over a disagreement with the building’s owners as to what constitutes proper building maintenance and management. Kevyn Harvey, the building’s recently removed assistant manager, says he and his manager, who preferred to remain were both dismissed because ‘‘we were trying to get things done, but’ the owners just would not cooperate. Apartments leak, the pool needs repairing, and the plumbing in the building is a total mess.”’ The building’s manager says he was hired July 2, while Harvey began July 26. Irene Glazebrook, the newly hired area property manager for the building’s owners, Nacel Properties Ltd., says she fired the two because they were incompe- tent and the apartment is ‘‘a filthy, disgusting pigsty.”” ALCOHOL ON BREATH She added the apartment’s manager was withholding rents from 32 suites, had alcohol on his breath when she talked to him, ‘‘and the other one did not know the first thing about repairing even a leaky sink.” According to Glazebrook, the manager has been paid and Harvey will be paid, “‘when we figure out exactly what work he has done. We didn’t even know he was SHAKERS: 31 Making Vancouver a film capital is hard work. working here.
