_More than just aches and pains

SOME people think that ar-
thritis is nothing more than
aches and pains, or that it’s
something only old people
get. Other people think that
it’s caused by the weather
and in any case, nothing can
be done about it. All those
people are wrong.

quickly turns into something
more — serious chronic il-
Iness which usually lasts a
lifetime.

Arthritis isn’t exclusive to
the elderly. In B.C. alone,
more than 3,500 children
under the age of 16 have ar-
thritis, and many of the adult

sufferers are in the childbear-
ing, wage-earning age group
between 30 and 50.

Arthritis has nothing to do
with the weather — although,
like the rest of us, people
with arthritis may ‘‘feel
worse’’ when the weather is
bad.

It is not true to say that
nothing can be done about
arthritis. Many severe forms
of arthritis have been
eliminated during the past 20
years as a result of research.
These include rheumatic
fever, gout and a wide variety
of rheumatic diseases that
resulted from infections.

Other forms of arthritis,
such as lupus and rheumatoid
arthritis, are no longer
hopeless, thanks to advances
in disease control methods.
Reconstructive surgery has
also greatly improved the
quality of life for people
whose joints have been

severely damaged.
