It began with the salutation ‘‘Dear Neighbor’’, and then continued to tell me about all the young people converging © on this pub which will be us- ed as a place to get drunk before and after the discote- ques. The letter is signed, ‘‘a concerned neighbor’’. 1 sure hope that myself and others who occasionally drop into these drinking establishments are not in- cluded as members of this drunk disco crowd! 1 wonder what the neighbors of places where you drink are writing re about you right now? You wouldn’t be converging on their neighborhood pub to get drunk before the disco — or would you? In the future, if anyone wishes to convey information to me, I would appreciate it in a more ra- tional style. Lisa Ingram West Vancouver Dear Editor All the talk about native nations in Canada is nonsense. Nations are in- dependent entities. They are generally self-supporting, autonomous wholes. Few, if any, of our Indian, Metis and other aboriginal populations qualify on these grounds. Prime Minister Trudeau offered full citizenship and eventual assimilation back in 1970. Now he is pushing a new paternalism, unending subsidies and self-determina-- tion. This is cynicism of the worst kind. Recognize land claims bas- ed on historic facts. But do not, otherwise, set our native people apart. They are Cana- dians like everyone else. Ethnic differences must not be recognized on our Con- stitution. Otherwise we are on a long slippery slope to personal prejudice and anarchy. Hon. Jack Davis, MLA North Vancouver-Seymour rrr YOUTH Discovering and marketing your skills.
