A quiet Easter

in Jerusalem

EASTER FRIDAY, the most solemn day of the
Christian year, passed peacefully in the old city of

Jerusalem.
Thousands of Christian
pilgrims from virtually all

comers of the world paraded
through the streets of the
city tO mark the day on
which Christ was crucified
Their progress through the
streets was watched carefully

by hundreds of Israel
pohce, militia and volunteer
security personel but the day
passed without incident
Easter tension in the city
of Jerusalem has been
abating over the past several
years, with a growing

tolerance among the three
Majyor religions —
Christianity, Judaism and
Moslem — that all consider
the city a holy place

Incidents of violence
which marred Easter seasons
in the years following the
Israeli’s recapture of the
Holy City have not occured
in recent years

High-level negotiations
