By JEAN NIDETCH ONE SHIP, two ships, there’s no ship like friend- ship. These words, scrawled in childish handwriting across a page of my grades school autograph book, reminds me how dearly we hold our friends, even from our earliest years. Most of us would agree -that . without friendship, life would have little meaning. Yet when it comes to weight control, even the most well-meaning of friends can cause us no end of trouble. “To like and dislike the same things, that -is indeed true friendship,’’ wrote the - Roman Sallust in 40 B.C. Yet if one of the ‘‘ties that bind’’ is a shared passion for cheese Danish or mocha fudge, either your friendship or your waistline is bound to suffer! Overweight people do tend to seek other overweight peo- ple as friends, perhaps because they feel less self- conscious with themselves, or perhaps because of the com- raderie of shared eating ex- periences. But when a friend- ship becomes an obstacle to reaching a goal, it’s time to re-examine the relationship. If your friendship is most _-often expressed in the morn- ing cof! fee-break-over-cof fee- cake, the shopping expedi- tion with lunch, or dinner dates and pizza breaks, perhaps it’s time your togetherness found a new ex- pression. Why not invite a friend over next time just to talk? Or for the tea or coffee without the ‘‘with-its’’? Bet- ter yet, why not get out and DO something together? Visit a flea. market or art gallery, engage in some volunteer work, attend a play Or concert, sign up for an aerobics class. And reject the idea that every get-together must culminate with a food experience. . If you explain to your friend that you enjoy her company, but can’t handle the extra calories, she should understand. You may even find your friend is undergo- ing the same struggle with the calories you are, but was afraid to mention it! In fact, group of friends which meets weekly at each other’s homes for a game -of bridge and a low calories meal.
