ad C8 - Sunday, August 28, 1983 - North Shore News Zoos are just ove ‘pop Not places of learning I KNOW there are plenty of arguments suppor- ting zoos including the education of children and the protection of endangered species. Personally, I find them depressing places, over-run with mobs of unruly kids more intent on raising hell than improving their educa- tion. The only reason we decid- ed to visit the Frankfurt Zoo was that we were running out of things to do. Although a may get a lot of flack for saying so, Frankfurt isn’t a whole lot more exciting then Saskatoon. World War II is partly to blame as the allies gave Frankfurt such a pasting that more than 60% of it was destroyed. Everything is new, utilitarian and dull. For 1.50 D.M. a ticket (about 75¢) you can take a combination train and bus ride to the zoo gates. Don’t — ask me the bus numbers since we got on and off three wrong ones before we got the right instructions from a school kid. Rather than at- tempting the return trip we took 2 cab to the main sta- tion for five bucks and didn’t regret it. The zoo costs seven D.M. (a D.M. is about 50¢) for adults. Inside the gates are extra-clean washrooms and both a snack bar and a restaurant. Snacks are cheap | - a good bratwurst on a French roll is 3.50 D.M. and draft beer is 2.60 D.M. You can get the usual fries, ice cream and chocolate. There is a large map of the zoo enclosure, all in German but fortunately illustrated with pictures. If you start from the snack bar and take the left trail you can follow the crowds and you won't miss much. The left. trail leads you along: the perimeter of the zoo and once you reach the far wall, bear right and you won't backtrack. The bears are off by themselves to the far left of the main gate but if you ~Careers in Travel We can open the door to the C) world of travel lor YOU DAY & EVENING COURSES : TRAVEL COUNSELLING . One black panther had a small kitten that was driving her nuts. Mom figured junior needed a bath and junior figured Mom needed her tail attacked. Finally Mom gave up and leaped up to the highest perch in the cage. Baby couldn't teach her so he yowled and yodelied in- cessantly. Mom closed her eyes and put her paws over her ears. The Bengal tiger appears to like people and lies as close to the front of his cage as he can, turning his head to give the spectators the best camera angles. He hangs his paws out of the bars and it might be possible for so- meone with long arms to touch. Dangerous but in- teresting to see the magnifi- cent creature at such close range. Have you ever seen a tapir? These wild pigs are .about the ugliest porkers in existence and their infants are perfect miniatures of the adults. Unless she’d,-looked in a mirror, that baby: ‘must have been an awful shock for mother pig. If you've got small ‘kids with you, hang on to them when you go into the building that houses the noc- turnal animals. It’s very dark and could be frightening for a child to get separated from you. Also, a sign warns you to keep a good grip on your purses and wallets. It would be very easy for someone to relieve you of valuables. I noticed too that cock- roaches are nocturnal. They share the cages with the other wee beasties, probably to the zoo’s dismay. Allow a half day for the zoo. It’s quite a’ walk but there are plenty: of rest areas. If you're taking children, a washroom stop at the main entrance before you begin is a must. WINE 21 day tour.
