Dealing with doctors of the deep

Is there a doctor in the
house? You bet. Al cruise
ships have a resident
physician, nurses, a hospital
and a dispensary. From
sunburn to stroke, fractures
to foot-rot, the doctor sees it
all - and from what I've seen,
does a fine job of it.

The first and only time
I've ever needed a doctor on
shipboard was a few years
ago, on an Italian ship, in the
Caribbean. It was a happy
coincidence that ] knew him
socially from another cruise
and my brief appointment
stretched to an hour-long
gab session. I, along with
forty other passengers,
developed a nasty throat
infection.

My lItahan frend pres-
cribed twelve horse-sized
antibiotic pills, to be taken
four times a day - along with
a ban on alcohol. I washed
the pills down with C.C. and
soda and they worked just
fine.

day on this cruise when our
middle daughter came down
with an ear-ache. She trotted
down to the doctor, got well-
checked-out and came back
with a bottle of drops. Ear
cured in a day.

Our oldest daughter
doesn't drink alcohol. Not
that we've ever made her
take the pledge or any such
nonsense but she doesn't like
it. Wine makes her flush and
the rest of the stuff doesn’t
taste half as good as a cup of
tea. Ah, but strawberries!
Each day the Island Princess
comes out with the “cocktail
of the day.” When the
special was. strawberry
daquiris, she couldn't resist -
besides, they taste just fine.

I don’t know if it was the
berries or the small amount
of liquor but she got such an
attack of stomach pains that
she, too, headed for the
doctor. Some chalky junk
put her night in a day. I was
scared to death - envisioning
appendicitis. Only after she

practice,” Dr. John Evans

The lady with the broken
ankle was from Edmonton.
“I told my family that I
wanted to set foot in South
America, but I set it down
too hard. In Caracas,
Venezuela.” Her husband
spent the rest of the cruise
getting his exercise behind
the wheel chair.

“You'd think that we'd
have a lot of geriatric
problems on a cruise like
this,” Dr. Evans remarked.

“We don't. These people are
healthy. They're ‘goers’ and
‘doers’ and get the most out
of life. Sick people stay
