‘peaceful e Al6-Sunday News, March 2, 1980 TUESDAY AFTERNOON Evacuate Dundarave! By NOEL WRIGHT If you happen to be around the 2400 _ block Bellevue in West Vancouver this coming Tuesday af- ternoon when fire trucks and police cars with screaming sirens descend on _ that Dundarave thoroughfare — not to worry! No need to get uptight, either, when you see them evacuating residents from the Séastrand apartment block at 150-24th Street. They're only practising, and all for your own good. Prompted by recent public concern about the handling of hazardous materials like chlorine and propane, West Van Mayor Derrick Humphreys has arranged for an . exercise to test the ‘*disaster response capabilities’’ of the municipality's police and fire departments in the event of a potential Mississauga-type rail catastrophe. The B.C. Rail tracks run paraliel to Bellevue Avenue in the area of the exercise -- which will simulate an endangered propane tank rail car exposed to fire and possible explosion as_ the result of a collision between the train and a furnace fuel oul truck. The hazard caused by the collision will call for evacuation of the area, including residents of the Seastrand highrise. REAL TRAIN The “victims” will be escorted to a staging area and then transported to an “identification and emergency welfare site” -- conveniently located at the West Van Recreation Centre at 22nd and Marine. B.C. Rail has agreed to play ball by providing a real train for the exercise, in which its own personnel are expected to lake part. Everyone in the neigh- borhood has been notified and the various roles in the drama have been assigned. The curtain goes up at 1:45 p.m. The media have been warned by municipal hail “not to interview par- ticipants”. Whether this is because the participants or the municipality are ex- pected to be in a state of Shock as a result of the exercise was not made clear in the official press release. In any event, it promises to be an interesting Tuesday afternoon around Dun- darave. The kind of af- ternoon that would have benefited the good citizens of Mississauga if they'd organized one before their real-life disaster struck.
