Dykeman causes volcano to erupt

Re: "NV volcano youth fest under fire.”

TE would like to question the conduct of

Mayor Murray Dykeman and North Vancouver
District Council in the handling of the applica-
tion made by Irwin Oostindie fora curfew
extension for this year's Under the Voleano fes-
tival in Cates Park.

Mayor Dykeman’s conduct was mexcusable
for a person holding a political position such as
his. His blatant refusal to acknowledge the pres-
ence of Me. Oostindie atthe Aug. 9 council
meeting. coupled with his refusal to consult
Oostindie on questions concerning the festival
Gater raised by council) showed, ia my opinion,
Dykemian’s lack of good faith and professional
conduct surrounding the issue.

! would also Tike to question where Mr.

Dykeman’s interests lay inthis matter and if he
was properly representing the interests of the
general public of North Vancouver,

Asa youth volunteer for last year’s festival, |
know first-hand the support that the festival
received from residents, both “young” and
“old.” By cutting back the time alloted for this
year’s festival, Mayor Dykema has senta sour
message to the youth, and to all other residents,
of the North Shore,

On a larger scale, Dykemati’s achons have
typified the kind of treatment that vouth have
received in this district and in this city.

Most “concerned citizens” are more than
willing to address the issue of youth crime but
are not prepared to dedicate even half of that
chergy to sponsor or support youth-oriented
events, ai example being the Cong-lforgouen?)

youth of North Vancouver had the vote in the
next district election, Mr. Dykeman wouldn't
have been so quick to dismiss Mr. Oustindie's
request, a request made on the behalf of all focal
youth,

I would have truly expected more from a
man of position such as Mayor Dykeman, yet
because of the disinterest and ignorinee shown
towards the youth of this city. conduct such as
Mr. Dykeman’s is all that Dhave ever come to
expect.
