I think most people would clavify this kind of material as pernographic. How — does Cosmopelitan get ranked with Canadian Living and Readers Digest as being worthy of placement in a supermarket checkout line? And even if it does, why is Safeway placing it so conveniently for curious pre- pubescent children? Theresa Moylan West Vancouver Dear Editor: 1 just read that BC Hydro donated money towards Westview elementary school’s new playground. I would like to commend companies like BC Hydro that take the initiative to be invelved in the local community, and in particular our children’s education. My child is at Norgate school, where we recently built a new playground. We received financial support from. several community busi- nesses and organizations, including BC Hydro, BC Gaming Commission, North Vancouver District, Vancouver Foundation, Squamish Nation, North Vancouver School Board, Capilano Lions 2000 TOVOTA ECHO Automatic © CD Player \° Int. I spoke personally with most of the individuals within these organizations who were responsible for making the decision to donate, and all were enthusi- astic and genuinely interested in the chil- dren and our school. In addition, I would like to give tremendous thanks to the local businesses who donated supplies for our playground installation, and fed our volunteer workers. [ think vou will find that businesses are involved in our chil- dren’s learning, much more than credit has been awarded to them. Eilen Dearnley North Vancouver [tis wonderful, in times of govern- ment cut backs and shortages in schools, to Iearn that these groups are there to assist. These businesses and organizations deserve to be applauded for their involve- ment. 1 do not believe that they get the Canadian tariff ; action brings unfair | hike in food costs Dear Editor: Consumers are now suffering some food price increases and likely are unaware of both the fact and the “reason.” The reason Is: On Aug. | the government in Ottawa launched an action against the EU (Common Market countries) by instituting a 100% tariff import against certain food items from those coun- tries. It’s a retaliatory action taken because the EU refuse to buy Canadian beef and pork products because of Canada’s practice of pumping hormones (plus what?) into livestock. A decision I see they have every right to make if they so choose. The “certain items” affected by this new tariff (as taken from government news release #174) consist of beet, pork, products from all bovine and swine and for good measure they toss in English cucumbers and gherkins. By whatever error or intent Mr. or Mrs. Public are being hit in the pocket by this tariff due the fact that food retailers are, in at least one instance elevating prices of any EU foodstuffs they sell, even foods that are not in any way affected by this new spe- cific tariff. One store even posted notices in August stating size- able price increases to come on some items. I myself saw said notices on Belgian chocolates, Dutch cookies, and British-made jar preserves, Price on latter soon jumped from $2.48 to $3.29 where it remains at time of writing. Other items were not checked. 1 wrote to the chief executive officer of the store in question. T pointed out the freely available data from Ottawa and suggest- ed that somewhere along the line of importer/wholesaler/retail- er someone was ignorant of facts and had hold of the wrong end of the stick. The result: consumers are being gouged. The standard of public relations resulted in my not receiving any acknowledgement whatever. And prices remain jacked up. How else to see this other than as hiding behind a govern- ~ment shield to bilk buyers? It surely appears to be an intent to - defraud. A.B. Griffin North Vancouver B.C.AA., A.R.A,, 1.0.8.0.
