PUPS THAT BITE AND
ENDING A LIFE WITH COMPANY

Q: Can you train pups not te bite?

Dr. Grognet: Pups can easily be trained
not fo bite. You start by tirst teaching
them to have a gentle mouth, then they
should learn never to put their teeth on
people.

Pups that grow up with littermates learn
bite_inhibilign naturally. If a pup bites
another one tao hard, the bitee squeals
and stops playing. Owners can play the
same game by “yelping” when their pup
bites too hard and then walking away.
Losing a playmate is severe punishment
for a pup that craves affection. When the
pup comes back seeking attention, play
can resume, ,
This game should be played
continuously for the first few months of
the pup's life. With time, owners should
tolerate less and less pressure so that
eventually their. pup learns that any
pressure is too much.

Once’ this “mouthing only” stage is
achieved, owners can then teach their
dog that teeth should mot touch human
flesh. This is done by allowing the dog
ta:mouth and then in a strong’ voice
saying “OFF”. ' :

used in conjunction with a physical
reprimand. Qwners can hold their pup's
jowls and establish eye contact, or
quickly push. a finger under their pup's
tongue. Each reprimand is done for a
second or so, After the pup is
reprimanded, he should be called over
for a pat so that he, knows he Is still
loved.

helping an animal to die. Some provide a
house call. service so that pets can
spend their last hours at home. If you are
