Nine Vancouver projects receive national awards ARCHITECTS FROM Vancouver and Calgary claimed nine Merit Awards in the 1994 Canadian Wood Council Wood Design Awards Program, the program that recog- nizes and awards excellence in the design of wood buildings. A jury of three architects selected a total of 13 awards in three cate- gories — residential, commercial and renovated, from a total of 130 submissions. Judging took place in Ottawa on May 27. Vancouver architectural firm Christensen, Cassidy, Billington & Candelaria received a Merit Award in the residential category for its design of a vacation home in Tofino on Vancouver Island. The 205 sq. m (2,000 sq. ft.) house has traditional Douglas-fir framing arranged to provide modern interior space, part of which consists of a two-storey, 1.5 m square central atrium. The handsome quality of the exterior is carried to the interior with beautiful rendering of wood cabinets and millwork. The jury commented that “The interior wood connections are admirable. The architect and client have obviously expressed their interest in wood.” Vancouver architects swept all four Merit Awards in the commer- cial category. The Hulbert Group was recog- nized for its design of the 10,000 sq. m (100,000 sq. ft.) Vancouver labo- ratory of Forintek Canada Corp., Canada’s forest product research institute. The project is probably the largest modern wood-frame building in Canada and incorporates virtually every available wood product, both traditional and engineered, in its structure and finish. The jury felt that the building “... does not feel big for a large instituticnal building. The architect dealt effectively with the problem of scale so that the building has an intimate feel and is every- where interesting.” Past Award Program winner Neale Staniszkis Doll Adams Architects chimed a Merit Award for the fona [sland Regional Park Building, a smail, graceful structure that barely leaves its mark on the landscape. Employing a single-storey design with an undulated glued-laminated timber roof, the architects successful- ly merged the building with the site in a unified composition of concrete and wood, The jury described the building as “high achievement from a very simple design.” Another past Award Program winner, Larry McFarland Archi-tects Limited, received a Merit Award for the First Nations Longhouse, 4 native student centre at the University of British Columbia. Based on Coast Salish native architecture, the building incorpo- rates huge western red cedar logs arranged in frames that support a dis- tinctive curving roof. The jury liked the romantic feel of the building and the use of ele- ments, such as exposed logs, cedar siding and a large glazed curtain wall, that “combined the traditional with the contemporary.” The husband and wife team of John and Patricia Patkau received a Merit Award, their third since the program began in 1984, for the Newton Library in Surrey. Glazed, exaggerated perimeter walls on the north and south give the library a public presence in the sur- rounding sea of strip malls and sub- divisions. The central roof valley that tuns the length of the building teduces the scale at both the front entrance and inside the library and assists the inflow of natural tight. The library, which makes promi- nent use of glued-laminated timber. was described by the jury as a “building of substance that signifi- cantly enhances the community.” The jury gave four Merit Awards in the renovation category, all for projects located in the Vancouver area. Forseth increased living space from 120 sq. m to 200 sq.m (1,275 to 2,080 sq. ft.) using details that recalled both the cottage image of the original house and ship interi- ors. Esthetic details were emphasized throughout, especially in the conver- gence of wood post, beam and handrails in the loft. Such attention to detail moved the jury to marvel at “the level of complexity so ably exe- cuted and consistently applied by all concemed throughout the house.” Birmingham and Wood Archi- tects and Planners (in association with Paul Merrick Architects) received recognition for their renova- tion of Graham House, Green College, part of the University of British Columbia. The major focus of the renovation was the dining hall, which was vastly expanded by removal of the attic and See Clubhouse page 19 .
