8 - Sunday, Septomber 4, 1994 - North Shore News Greg Felto NGR IN THE movie 9-5, Dolly Parton called it “a cup of ambition.” Throughout Twin Peaks Kyle McLaughlin exalted it as “darned fine!” What is it? Coffee, of course — black gold, Ethiopian elixir. Our increasingly nihilistic anti-culture, with its obsession for moral rectitude, docs not allow for pure aes- thetic enjoyment. To partake of the bean in all its variety, is to engage in the most civilized of pleasures, especially al fresco on balmy Indian summer nights. Alas, the price of pleasure has gone up. Starbucks (my first food group) raised its prices by 10 cents a cup; Murchie’s, a quarter. The frost in Brazil is to blame, they say. A spokesman for Nabob says it is rather due to higher market demands and higher labor costs for coffee pickers. I have also heard that the world’s coffee cartels are holding back production to force prices up. If this be the case we should all be worried. Oil is one thing; the body and soul of Western culture (tea-drinking Britain respectfully excepted) is another. Over a year that extra dime will add up, but it is the price I am prepared to pay for my Epicurean pleasure. Are you affected by the recent rise in coffee prices? vv 7] Sue Hunt North Vancouver No, i drink tea, so I'm not affected by the rising costs. Zahir Abdulla North Vancouver i don’t drink much cof- fee so it doesn’t really affect me, right? Kevin Friesen North Vancouver Well, not so far. I still drink as much coffee as I used to, and I’m still buy- ing Starbucks coffee, so they haven't got me to stop buying my lattes an a regu- Ann Tonkin North Vancouver No, I’m not because I'm not really a coffee drinker. Jamie Kaufmann North Viuncouver Honestly, not really. [I'm addicted to coffee as it is in the first place. It doesn’t really matter to me how much it costs, I'm doing a lot more coffee at SURVEY TEAM lar basis. THE NORTH Shore News survey team telephoned 465 North and West Vancouver residents to find out whether you have been affected by the recent rise in coffee prices. The following is a complete break- down of survey results. Use your noodle when picking pasta Dear Editor: Re: Catherine Atyeo column “Hyper parent frets over Kraft Dinner,” Friday, Aug. 26. Catherine Atyeo is one of those parents who read the label. but don't see what they are reading. If she did, she would realize that she does have some valid reservations about feeding her children Kraft Dinner, or “KD” as she refers to it, on a regular basis. Kraft Dinner, like most pasta sold in the supermarket, is made from white flour (They call it enriched “wheat” flour). White flour has had over 26 natural nutrients removed. and then is “enriched” with four to seven “essential” (synthetic) nutrients. {1 wonder how they decide which ones are essential?) ft is left with little fibre, which you can't replace with a vitamin pill. The “cheese” she mentions is powdered, and to arrive at that state has to be highly processed, which involves losing sume of the original nutrients. Let’s see what else is in the box. Added salt, sodium phos- phates, lactic acid, citric acid and color. And that is nothing com- pared to the flavored varieties. For your information, Catelli makes macaroni that is 100% whole wheat, with no additives, preservatives, or salt. Cook it up. add a splash of miik and some freshly grated cheddar, and you have a much healthier meal in the same amount of time as Kraft Dinner. Add some raw vegetables to the side of the plate and you can call the meal downright wholesome. No slaving in the kitchen for one hour on this one! I'm not saying that Kraft Dinner is a horrible food. But if you can do better nutritionally in the same time frame, why not make the effort? By the way, Econsider myself a responsible parent for watching gut for the health of iny children, and consider the term “Hyper Parent Syndrome” in reference to people like myself, quite offen- sive.
