We are not rednecks
in North Vancouver

Dear Editor:

Re: “Wrestling with racism in
North Vancouver,” Sunday, May 1.

How much longer will North
Vancouver dwellers have lo put up
with accusations of being rednecks
and racists because we cannot abide
by political correctness? It means
we failed to elect Mobina Jaffer
and we don't grovel enough at witat
the vociferous multicultural society
is preaching.

* Canadian people are probably
by far the most tolerant population
on Earth — infinitely more tolerant
than where most of the minority

_ pressure groups come from — and
yet it doesn't appear to be enough.

I cume from a European country
many years ago, where English is
not the first language, and I didn’t
jump up and down to have
Canadians and Canada translate
everything into my mother tongue,
adopt my traditional headgear, nor
give me preferential treatment to be
hired. If | emigrated to this country,
it was to live as a Canadian and to

anywhere in the world; it promotes
a ghetto mentality and we cun see
and read everyday through the
media the results and the horrors
happening to people from different
traditions and ethnic origins
brought together by conflicts or
quirks of history.

I believe a country can be a
melting pot where people come
from all over the world and assimi-
Jate under the official language and
traditions of their new country.
This will not be achieved by groups
bound by exclusive traditions and
religions, such as the multicultural
society promotes — this is a sure
recipe for catastrophe.

So please, no mere lectures on
how bigoted we are and stop spend-
ing our tax dollars on trivialities,
even if it is only $18,500.
