THE GREATER Vancouver Regional District (GVRD) recently dis-
tributed flyers throughout the Lower Mainland asking for input on

- their planned changes to our drinking water. The GVRD says that

secondary disinfectant is needed to kill bacteria that is getting into
the water inside the distribution system. Two options being consid-
ered are chlorine end chloramine. Chlorine is already used as the pri-
mary disinfectant; using it as a secondary disinfectant would result in
water that tastes like chlorine and it is expensive, Chloramine is

cheap, but it kills fish. Whenever a water main breaks, fish die, Hoth
combine with organisms (such as decaying vegetation) to create solids
which have been responsible for cancer in lab tests. A third option
would use ozone as the primary disinfectant and minimal chlorine as
the secondary disinfectant. This option is considered the most enyi-
roamentally friendly and the most expensive. ‘The GVRD says that if
this.option were implemented, Lower Mainiand residents would face
hefty hikes in their water hills. So... :
