Capilano Camera/ Len Hutchinson Tenyeers ago, Len Hutchinson had a vision. Good thing, since most of his business has to do with how people see things. ‘Len saw an opportunity to provide people with quick. service photofinishing and figured the time was right to strike out on his own. That inno- vative business was Capilano Camera, located in Park Royal's South Mall. “We handie all photo . graphic needs, sel] cameras binoculars, frames, albums, ‘process film, prints andi slides and everything associated with ‘lab work and photographic retail,” explains Hutchinson. When asked by Park Royal Today about the uniqueness ofthe North Shore, Len was quick to point out "I think the cornmunity is small enough so that it gives youa better opportunity to get to know your customers and that’s what | enjoy.” Len's success is not motivating him to open in other locations. “You cannot get to know your customers if you have more than one Store, so I'm quite happy right where I'm at. It's a warm Store and I wantto Keep it that way.” AS for the changes to Park Royal Shopping Centre over the past couple of years, Len is pleased to see the renovations are almost complete and he can get back to doing what he does best... serving the North Shore's photographic needs. Deelers Antiques/ John Jarvis Strolling through John and Mary Jarvis’s store in Park Royal North is like a walk through time. Deelers Antiques has been at Park Royal for 16 years, but the items in the store have been around alot longer. “We offer a full range of home furnishings ‘that could be brought in from anywhere, circa | 800 to 1940. But,” adds John, “the business has changed. Over the years, alot of Victorian and Georgian antique furniture has been swal- lowed up and So we're now selling a product dated more recently than we would have been selling 20 years ago.” Johnand Mary each take one buying trip per year to Europe, but much of their product also comes from local people who will call the store and say they have an antique or collectible they would like to sell. Jonntikes to joke thai he always gets things second-hand. “I started out in the secondhand furniture business with $76 in my pocket and arented trailer as my showroom. The aniique business just sort of evolved out of that.” John and Mary's son, Christian, has recently joined the business fulltime andJohn, a proud father, couldn't be happier. “I would hone that when my wife and | retire, all the years we've put into the business won't be wasted. if Christian takes it over, I'llbe very happy.” Deelers Antiques is a rarity in another sense as well. It may be the only antique store located ina shopping centre anywhere in Canada. “We like the foot traffic. We like the energy of the shopping centre, especially since the revitalization. We simply like the action.” 4 cs Ne N Allstar Sports/ Peter Keymer Peter Keymer’s greatest asset may be his easy-going manner.
