8 - Sunday, June 7, 1992 - North Shore News =a NORTH VANCOUVER DISTRICT COUNCIL Resident pushes for special crosswalk signals THE CONTINUING ef- forts of one Lynn Valley resident may result in the installation of special crosswalk signals at the junction of Lynn Valley Road and Mollie Nye Way. By Martin Millerchip Contributing Writer Norm Duplissie has been col- lecting petition signatures and lobbying North Vancouver District Council for the last four months in an atfempt to prevent an acci- dent at an intersection that he says is unsafe for pedestrians. As Duplissie told the district’s standing committee on operational services on Monday night, ‘‘I’m not prepared to sit down on this issue.” The district's traffic and safety committee: has considered the matter at least twice, and in response to a 444-name petition collected by Duplissie it conducted a survey of pedestrian peak-hour usage of the intersection. The committee, however, found that the intersection had: e@ Jow crossing figures (cight in the peak hour); @ an excellent vehicle accident record (no reported accident from 1988 to 1991); @ satisfactory driver visibility; @ an existing pedestrian traffic signal one block away. The committee recommended, therefore, that no traffic light be installed at Mollie Nye Way. ° OVERALLS Reg. 32.99-42.99 Sale from 199.2599 e DENIM SKORTS Reg. to 26.99 Sale 1699 Reg. 6.50 Richmond Centre Surrey Place SIX-YEAR-OLD Theresa and Peter, five, hang onto ‘‘Ben,”’ a bronze sculpture of a calf by Joe Fafard. But Duplissie maintained that pedestrian use of the intersection would increase during the summer holidays when children visit the Karen Magnussen wave pool and that pedestrians would probably not walk an extra two blocks to use the existing light. Council's operational standing committee reversed the traffie and safety committee recommendation and passed a motion on May 4 that council should approve the traffic light installation. At the May 11 council meeting, staff asked for a deferral, inform- ing council that the cost of traffic signals could be up to $50,000 and that an enginecring study to syn- See Use page 10 | JUST ARRIVED BOYS & GIRLS _ INFANTS TO 6X : e JUMPERS & SHORTALLS Reg. to 36.99 sale 1999 ¢ SHORT SLEEVE T-SHIRTS Reg. to 22.99 Sale 999.4 299 ° OSH KOSH SOCKS SALE 399 ‘KIDZ BIZ LYNN VALLEY CONTRE 988-7466 _ Willowbrook i Ieetenetnetit ata Our Father's Day Sale is the perfect opportunity to show Dad you inherited his smarts.
