Dear Editor: 1 would like to publicly respond to North Vancouver Mayor Mur- ray Dykeman as he did not see fit to return any cf my calls after the incident in which the District: was responsible for a fish kill in Thain Creek, Mayor Dykeman was in council and voted to appoint me to the Environmental Task Force and the Parks Committee. In doing so, the mayor acknowledges my commit- ment to the community and my extensive experieaces as an cn- vironmental toxicologist and biologist and my working history with the Ministry of Environment and Fisheries and Oceans and my experience as a businesswoman. I also have had very close con- tact with the District as the presi- dent for the North Lonsdale Ratepayers Association and have sat on the Braemar Dempsey Liai- son Committee, Transportation Study, Parks Siudy, IMegal suites. Columnist’s comment annoys reader Dear Editor: Re: Travelwise column, Sunday, April 14, I find Barbara McCreadie’s comment, ‘‘Lori, freaked — down-and-outers make her gag,” to be insensitive in the extreme. | have worked with and for Lori’s so-called ‘‘down-and-outers’’ for the better part of my working life and wouldn't trade my skid row experiences for all the Hawaiian holidays the world had to offer. The majority of down-and- outers will never see Hawaii in March, Most feel lucky to be able to afford a bus ride to Stanley Park. Perhaps if Lori had been bitten by the compassion bug instead of the ‘‘buybug’’ she might not gag at the sight of a down-and-outer. Resident angry with NV District North Shore Childcare Society, Northlands Golf Course Review Committee, etc. All this has been on a voluntary basis and I have enjoyed fulfilling my commitment to the community in this way. Many people in North Lonsdale rely on my help to solve conflicts with developers and the District and { hope that 1 have been helpful in the fulfilment of their needs, Mayor Dykeman's com- ments that infer that [ call the District “If a truck drives onto that site’’ is not true and is an at- tempt to trivialize my involvemeni in the community and trivialize my commitment to the environ- ment and laws on water courses and to designated authorities such as the Ministry of Environment and Fisheries and Oceans. [ have worked hard to reclaim Thain Creek and to ensure its rehabilitation. The District on a previous occasion already polluted the creek and ! was advised it wouldn't happen again. Dear Editor: I am writing regarding a let- ter to the editor ‘‘Daughter’s last wish fulfilled.’’ This letter was the most heart-warming letter 1 have ever read. It is really hard to believe that there are such people in this world. This lady is really very special. I any sure it must have been very rewarding for her to read eg. It shocked me further when District staff showed the same lack of precau- tions two days later in a smaller nearby creek. Is it right to deter citizens who are interested in the community from reporting incidents and who insist on the education of work crews tO prevent any further simi- Jar incidents? J urge members of this com- munity not to be deterred by a mayor for whom the environment is not of primary importance, and to remember that other members of council are concerned and will continue to see that education Projects are accomplished and that this District will give the hiring of an environmental officer a priori- ty.
