(With this ad) Discovering unspoiled Scotland STRANRAER — This is not Paris or Rome, and the Berlin Wall never made it to here. But it’s down the road from the glitter of Edinburgh and London, and most of all it’s Eurcpe at a slow, unhurried pace, where the toads are uncrowded, villagers have the iime of day for visitors, and a sense of humor prevails. Ai a liitle shop here, for exam- ple, a card in the window says: “English spoken, American understood.”’ Foik from these parts roved the world and settled in new lands. One iad from nearby Kirkbean, later known as John Paul Jones, founded the U.S. Navy. They take a pride in their American and Canadian cousins. Stranraer, on the southwest tip of Scotiand, actuully gets quite a number of Canadian tourists because it is the mainland ter- minus for a busy ferry run from Larne, near Belfast. Some fiy into London, take the train and ferry to the south of Ireland, visit there, and then carry on to Stranraer. The easiest way to enjoy a Scot- tish vacation, however, is to fly non-stop to London, as | did vy Canadian Airlines, and then hop on an Air UK flight to Glasgow or Edinburgh. Scotland is a small country, and most places are within a two-hour drive. The road to Stranraer goes via the old market town of Dumfries, where Robert the Bruce began his campaign for the Scottish crown by upsportingly murdering his rival Comyn in a church. The town was sacked three times by the English, in quieter times the poet Robert Burns spent much time here, and today it is sheer bliss to stroll along Lover’s Walk by the River Nith. Resist the temptation te make one-night stops, which can be ex- hausting, and setiJe in at the Cally Palace Hotel at Gatehouse-of- Fleet, or the North West Castle Hotel, Stranraer. Then you can relax or do a multitude of things, such as visit glorious gardens at Threave, near Castle Douglas, or Castle Kennedy Gardens near Stranraer. Galloway Forest Park has trails and picnic areas, and the Solway Coast Heritage Trail is marked by roadside Celtic crosses. Cyclists will find a maze of quict roads, there is a sailing centre at Loch | shop optica 925-1522 C-1348 marine drive west vancouver Ken, gliding from Dalbeattie, riding and pony trekking. History, always a strong pull to Scotland, comes to life in the cas- tles such as Caerlavrock, unique with it triangular plan and still surrounded by a_ water-filled moat. Drumianrig Castle, near Dum- fries, continues to thrive as the stately home of the Dukes of Buccleuch, and this year was ihe setting for an international cycling festival. The bicycle was invented near here around 150 years ago, a garden near Dumfries sowed the seed for J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan, while today archaelogists are un- covering the remains of 1,500 years of history at Whithorn, where St. Ninian established Scotland’s first church. You can visit delightful towns with neat rows of stone houses such as Kirkcudbright and watch the fishing boats unload, or drive down to the Mull of Galloway and explore tiny fishing villages. The scenery is always good and the sunsets occasionally brilliant. Portpatrick is an attractive little resort with a quaint harbor and BE IN THE “NO” pubs where a popular lunch is fish and chips with a pint of beer. The Scots love their ‘‘pub lunches’’ and at one small hostelry, the Commercial Hote! in’ Kirkeud- bright, there is a selection of 11 desserts. Golf courses are everywhere, from the tough links of Stranraer to the great vistas of Portpatrick. There are plenty of nine-hole courses where beginners and children can find space and a pa- tient attitude, and green fees are rarely more than $20. Both the Cally Palace and North West Castle offer free golf to guests taking full board while the Cally Palace has 100 acres of fine grounds ideal for walking and retaxing. Rates are a modest $120 for bed and breakfast for two. At both hotels, particularly the pillared CaSly Palace, insist on ac- commodation in the old parts. The Caily Palace has recently refurbished all rooms in the origi- nal building to a high standard. North West Castle, former home of Arctic explorer Sir Jolin Ross, was awarded the Scottish Tourist Board’s Hotel of the Year award in 1989, New Veterinary Service Announcement MAINLAND MOBILE VETERINARY SERVICES LTD. is a mobile clinic created to provide smal! animal veterinary care at your home.
