In doing so, we've tried to define coverages like Third Party Legal Liability, No- Fault Accident Benefits, In- verse Liability and the special protection against Liability briefly in the September 22nd _ edition. Very simply, this coverage can provide you with a higher limit of financial pro- tection in case you cause an Auto Topic. If you missed the earlier column, check pages 33 and 34 in your Autoplan Motorist Kit — the nifty lit- tle booklet you get from your broker with your in- surance papers. This week, we check out the most popular optional coverage — Extended Third Party Legal Liability. We talked about Extended accident resulting in proper- ty damage, injury or death. The basic Autoplan package will pay up to $200,000 to a third party with a valid claim against you. But don’t forget, if an accident victim gets a $500,000 claim settlement, your basic insurance would only cover $200,000 and you would most likely be ‘‘on the hook’’ for the rest. Over 61 per cent of all B.C. motorists carry $1 million Third Party Liability coverage, while another 12 per cent have boosted their limits to $2 million. Can claims result in set- tlements that high? If you are responsible for someone having suffered serious inju- ties, the answer is definitely “yes.” Late last month, an Alberta court awarded $5 million to an Edmonton man paralysed in an auto acci- dent. His long-term benefits could amount to $30 million. While this is an excep- tionally high settlement on an auto accident claim, there is no doubt that the ceurts are tending to award increas- ingly larger amounts for the future care of those with long-ierm disabilities. Next week, we'll Jook at ‘“*UMP"' — another ontional coverage and the perfect companion for Extended Li- ability.
