Van bunker POISON IS currently being set out to rid an area of the North Van- couver waterfront of its rat prob- lem. By PEGGY TRENDELL-WHITTAKER News Reporter The rats are located around an old concrete bunker at the foot of Forbes Avenue. As documented in ‘a Sept. 20 North Shore News story, the bunker is currently being occupied by a number of homeless North Vancouver men. Chief Public Health Inspector Bill Kimmett said a more ‘‘major baiting’ will be done in the area once the bunker dwellers move out. : Until then, he said, the health department is being very cautious to put out small doses of Quintox, the rat poison being used, mixed with butter and peanut butter. Cats and dogs are not at risk, he said, because the mixture is put in- side containers that make it inac- cessible to domestic pets. Squamish Indian Band counsellor Dick Williams said the presence of rats is an ongoing problem, and that the band in the past has taken measures such as calling in B.C. Pest Control. As to finding new homes for the bunker’s occupants — some of whom are band members Williams said, ‘‘it’s not just one person dealing with the situation.”’ The matter has been referred to the Ministry of Social Services and Housing, and Williams said that most of the bunker’s occupants have families close by with whom they could stay. “It’s not a matter of the families ignoring them,’’ he said. SHOP IN PERSON SEARS number of aiternative accom- modations offered by the Squamish band over the past months, Williams said in a previous interview. Since the North Shore News ran the story of the bunker’s occu- pants, Williams said the men have been ‘‘enjoying the publicity. “They’re not looking at it as a critical situation, they’re looking at it as a joke.”’ Williams said the situation is an embarrassment to the men’s fami- lies, and that it also creates a nega- tive image of how the band deals with its members. He does expect, however, that the men will be will- ing to accept other accommodation once the weather turns cold. In the meantime, Williams says the band’s Mosquito Creek marina has been asked to fill in the bunker. beautitul CIOCES your parsonal fragrance and cosmetic selection your money's worth...and more Prices in effect till Sunday, Oct. 15 NORTH VANCOUVER, Capilano Mail, open daily 9:30-5:30, Thurs. and Fri. till 9, Sun. noon to 5 p.m., phone 985-7722 Sears Canada inc Satistaction guaranteed or money tvturnded “Reg” ‘and “vas” teter to Sears Canada Inc. prices.
