INV women finish| in Big Sur event TWO NORTH Vancouver women were the first Canadians to cross the finish line at the Big Sur International Marathon in California on April 23. Rae Mix and Lynn Shaw, who train at the North Shore YMCA Marathon Clinic, placed in the top 20 in the 30 to 34 femsle age category. Mix completed the 26.2 mile run, which began in Big Sur and finished in Carmel, in three hours, 48 minutes, 14 seconds. Shaw’s time was three hours, 49 minutes and 37 seconds. The Big Sur Marathon, which also includes a six-mile walk, is rated among the top ten runs in the U.S. The 2400 entrants ran along the coastal highway on a rigorous course. Mix and Shaw can be seen training throughout the North Shore in their trademark fluorescent pink hats. ‘Cycie club tours Niayne THE NORTH Shore YMCA Bike Touring Club offers its first road day trip to Mayne Island May 14. . The combination of beautiful scenery, food and a day of activity makes bike touring a popular getaway ides for active people. Otters | swim to victory KIRSTEN TABERNER of the West Vancouver Otters Swim Club garmered a gold medal for the 50 and 100-metre freestyle event at the Dolphin Invitation swim mect at the Vancouver Aquatic Centre. Other Otters receiving top marks were Peter Marshall, who captured second place in the 9-10-year-old 50-metre backstroke, and third in the 100-metre backstroke. Sven Vor Fersen won third place in the 11-12-year-old 200-metre backstroke. At the Aquanaut Spring Invita- tional meet, top marks were cap- tured by Amielle Lake, who came second in the 25-metre fly and third in the 50-metre freestyle.
