Thomas), is going through a
traumatic period in his life but
finds comfort with a new friend.

They’re about the same size,
they're both new in town and nei-
ther gets along with the adults. But .
there is an age difference of about

390 years,
Elliot’s friend is a 400-year-old

‘botanist from a distant galaxy who
has been stranded on earth. The
frightened alien is on the run from
an ominous government agency
(those adults again) and has been
hidden by Elliot, his brother and
little sister.

tantly, he develops a deep emo-
tional bond with the boy. In a hi-
larious scene, the curious alien
samples a six-pack and E.T.’s stag-
gering drunkenness is also experi-
enced by Elliot innocently sitting
in class.

But there’s a down side to this
tie. Homesick and ailing, the ex-
tra-terrestrial is slowiy dying, tak-
ing his friend along with him. And
that’s when the government cat-
ches up to meet this incredible
find. ;

Needless to say, the Jump in
your throat at the end won't be
from grief. .

Thanks to a price tag under $30,
this is bound to be the video
best-seller of all time. The
award-winning John William's
score, a touching script by Melissa
Mathison and, of course, the
Spielberg magic, make £.T. a wel-
come heartwarmer to any home
library.

is regularly overlooked. This is a
sweet-natured story, not sac-
charine, as it has been unjustly
labelled. -

An orphan with a streak of op-
timism has been parceled off to
her rich aunt. The townspeople
are mostly frosty or cantankerous;
however, she gradually wins them
over with her simple charm. Then
one night, she suffers a paralyzing
fall while trying to sneak through
the attic window and her. illness
draws the community together.

The storyline may sound corny,
but Hailey Mills manages an
Oscar-winning performance. Her
innate sunniness is balanced by
Agnes Moorehead as a morbid
hypochondriac and Karl Malden as
a fire-and-brimstone preacher.
