The foundation opened a gift shop at the hatchery Friday. The opening marks the first step in a plan to set up similar gift shops in some of the 22 federal government hatcheries operating in B.C. An initial $40,000 capital in- vestment for the North Vancouver gift shop will generate an estimated annual net income in excess of $80,600 for the foundation. The foundation was formed to facilitate a coordinated public ef- fort to assist the enhancement and conservation of the Pacific salmon resource to complement federal and provincial government funding and programs already in place. The organization, a registered charitable organization, was in- corporated in August. The foun- dation operates under the sponsor- ship of the federal government through the Hon. Tom Siddon, minister of Fisheries and Oceans. In addition to the gift shop plan to raise funds and public awareness, the foundation is seek- By MICHAEL BECKER ing financial contributions and services from corporations active in major resource sectors such as fishing, mining, forestry, agriculture and tourism. While the fledglir:z foundation is in the process of gathering support from the community, it is also looking at how it can support the efforts of other groups actively in- volved in salmon enhancement programs. Said PSF executive director Ward Falkner: ‘‘We’ve had some discussions with North Shore enhancement groups now that the money is starting to come in.”’ The Capilano shop carries a broad selection of items including native art, jewelry, smoked salm- on, T-shirts and sweat shirts.
