Sup rmailbox tax break given LOCAL RESIDENTS living cheek by jow! with a Canada Post supermailbos have u new (ax break thanks to a recent Ontario government ruling allowing a five per cent reduction in municipal taxes to people living with a box in front of their homes. A property owner could launch an appeal to the B.C. Assess- ment Authority based on the recent decision. “f think it’s a step in the right direction. The next step is for someone who has this reduction to sue Canada Post for compensa- tion on the devalued property,” said Fred Masaro, a North Van- couver resident who almost had a supermailbox placed in front of his Cummins Place home in 1986, but fought the issue last spring as the western representative for Citizens United for Equitable Postal Service. Masaro said he predicted a year ago that property value decreases would result in a decreave in taxes. “If communities work with fixed budgets, it means we're all go- ing to pay more in taxes because of these boxes,’* he added. Masaro said he will be going to Toronto in April where his group will be meeting with federal opposition party heads. ‘‘Hopefully they'll reiterate their support for equitable postal service."' Last year Liberal feader John Turner and the federal NOP caucus told the group they would make the cut in door-to-door postal service an election issue. 3& E suspect charged in WV A BURNABY man was charged March 11 with two counts of break, enter and theft and one count of break and enter with intent to commit theft following a March 10 string of break and enters in West Vancouver.
