United Press Canada Ed Broadbent took his bid for the prairie farmers’ vote on Feb. 18 into Manitoba last week before making his first campaign foray into the Tory stronghold of Prince Edward Istand. The NDP leader, dogged by a bad cold as his cam- paign enters the homestretch, stopped over in Dauphin, Man., en route to P.E.I. where the Tories hold all four of the island's federal ridings after un- seating two Liberal members in last year’s spring election. Held by the Tories in the last election by 649 votes, Dauphin is one of four out of a total 14 ridings in Manitoba that promise a ught race with the NDP. In Humboldt Wednesday, before a crowd of about 400 in a church hall, Broadbent continued to vent his op- position to high interest rates. He blamed the Liberals for the first seven hikes since the U.S. rate began escalating in 1975 and denounced the Conservative government for bringing them to the current level of 14 per cent by four sub- sequent increases.
