Doug Collins @ gel this straight @ iF I saw Jimmy Pattison coming duwn Marine Drive | might wave ‘‘hello’’ but {| wouldn’t cross the road to slap him on the back. He may have done great things but he is a hard-eyed cove for whom pcople come second to bucks. His ever-ready smile is nothing more than a sales gimmick. I'm on his side in the honorary doctorate affair, though. He didn't ask for the silly thing in the first place but he does deserve some sort of medal for his role in Expo. However, anyone who ex- pects reason from the male and especially the female ninnies of UBC is a fool. The universities are strongholds of left-wing bigotry. The objection to Pattison's becoming a ‘‘Dr."’ was that he isa porn merchant. But what if he is? Did he take pictures of history professor Jean Elder’s bum and invite the city’s droolers to behold the mighty? You would think so, judging from her mid-Victorian excitement in this matter. She and her fellow-bitchers complain that because 1¢ distributes porn he is ‘‘degrading and humiliating women’’. But where are her brains? Doesn’t porn humiliate and degrade men, too? And by what right do these characters say that because Pat- tison deals in porn he is ‘‘an of- fensive symbol in the eyes of the women of British Columbia’’? What gall! Ninety-nine per cent of the women of British Columbia don’t give a fig what Pattison Puritans speak only for themselves. They are censors and intellectual bullies whose troops are student dunderheads. The issue is all the more in- congrous when you consider that activists from academe have long encouraged many of the por- nographic ills of our society. Regardless of the pros and cons of abortion as such, for instance, any sane person would have to agree that abortion-on-demand can be a thousand times worse than anything you might find in the porn prints. And if the esteem- ed Dr. Henry Morgentaler were to be nominated for an honorary doctorate at UBC, wouldn’t the very ones who rallied against Pat- tison be rallying for Henry? The push for permissiveness has also come in large part from the universities. Permissiveness in education, in lifestyle and in the arts. Didn't university professors create hell back in the 1950s when the cops raided a Vancouver theatre in which Cat On A Hot Tin Roof was being shown? In that case they were right to do so. But as the man said, one thing leads to another. So why act wants to censor the arts, it is argued that no-one has to buy a ticket, Well, no-one has to buy a porn magazine, either. The answer to this contradic- tion is to be sought in two fields: snobbery and polities. High life porn is OR, the low life variety is not. And just as the women's movement is almost entirely left- wing, su is the university protest industry. tt is therefore quite all right to support a sexy play that atiacks a rotting Southern society, but not all right to support the capitalist status quo and “imperialisav’. A neat example of that was seen when the Hotel Vancouver was about to be renovated and the UBC governors announced they would accept the Captain Cook painting that graced the hotel lob- by. The leftists at UBC, faculty and students, immediately screamed blue murder. The picture showed Captain Cook landing on the shores of British Columbia with Indians on their knees before him. Whether it was ereat art | don’t know, but even if it had been painted by a modern Rembrandt it would have made no difference to the lunatics who objected to it. In their view it giorified conquest and was therefore political porn. So it never did reach UBC. The Pattison fuss is of the same brand. As far as the mob is con- cerned Pattison is a capitalist, a restraint advocate and a Socred, and any move to queer his pitch meets with approval, Mind you, it would meet with my approval if honorary doc- torates were declared one with the Dodo. There are already too many people who are not doctors running around calling themselves such.
