Vancouver design challenge initiated by the Diamond Inforamtion Centre, on behalf of De Beers, to Canadian manu- facturers and designers. They were asked to create innovative designs that would reflect the 80s man of style. Designers were encourag- ed to incorporate unusual materials such as onyx, titanium and oxidized steel, providing a very masculine presentation and new texture to men's diamond jewelry, A variety of pieces were sub- mitted including diamond chains, tie bars, wrist bands, tie tacks, and the more pop- ular items such as cufflinks and rings. Appearance has an enor- mous effect on the way in which an individual is judg- ed, influencing both business and personal relationships. An increasing number of men are experimenting with a variety of diamond jewelry and accessories. According to a survey conducted by an indepen- dent research house, com- missioned by De Beeers, the acquisition rate of men’s diamond jeweiry was up almost 44 per cent from 1982 to 1984. And trends indicate that the number of men buy- ing diamond jewelry will continue to increase. ‘*The collection was assembled to increase con- sumer’s awareness on the wide-range of men’s dia- mond jewelry accessories that are available today,” said Norma Meneguzzi, manager, Diamond Infor- mation Centre. ‘‘By in- troducing the collection with the latest looks in men’s wear, it shows that men can express their individual sense of style both in their dress and jewelry.”’ De Beers launched the col- lection through -a men’s fashion show, which was divided into five segments. The fashions, jewelry and models presented in each segment were reflective of the following professions - travel, the arts, media, business/ entrepreneurs, and sports. Each segment was highlighted by cameo ap- pearances of respected leaders in these fields wear- ing pieces of diamond jewel- ry, specially designed to suit their personal style.
