By DAWN BURKE But Gerbracht perservered and now she is one of only eight female helicopter pilots : in Canada. Gerbracht, 2 North Van- couver resident, became in- terested in aviation 10 years ago. Enrolling in a fixed wing private pilots’ course at Pitt Meadows, she learned to fly a Cessna 150 and 172 on land and on floats. Ger- bracht later took a basic in- strument course and also learned to do aerobats in a Piper Cub. Encouraged by husband Harry, also a_ helicopter pilot, Gerbracht began lessons on their used Hughs 300 in September. Gerbracht quickly realized that because of a helicopter’s vertical, sidewards and rearward flight, each manoeuver is more critical than fixed wing flight. The course, slated to consist of 25 hours of lessons over six weeks stretched out to 100 hours of lessons over six months. Dick Wood, the in- Structor with Skyway Air Services at Langley who trained Gerbracht, says very few students complete the course in under 100 hours. ‘Helicopter flying is one of the most exhilarating ex- Periences in the world,” says Gerbracht, who admits she was tempted to quit two or three times. ‘It was close to graduation day in February that I discovered I was one of only eight female helicopter pilots in Canada. That is quite an ac- complishment. I love it!’ She says. . Gerbracht plans to tour the countryside by helicopter, taking photographs from which she does her oil paintings. In the future she would like to at- tempt aerobats in the helicopter. : He fave Levela ‘Blinds oe ‘mini blinds, lta “ “mini ‘blinds, vertical, pleated, woven woods. . FREE MEASURE . .
