Tough road to IF YOU find your eyes turned towards the , heavens when watching director Gary Medoway’s new movie, don’t worry about it. By COLIN LAMGNT Your eyes and your thoughts are bound to wander away during The Heavenly Kid and the ceiling is as good a place as any to look at. Rating this film as light entertainment is an understatement but a safe statement. The Heavenly Kid opens in the early 1960's when .fast Chevys and slicked-back hair ruled the road. . Our hero Bobby (Lewis Smith) is about to take part in a chicken race. Looking like James Dean's twin, Bobby hops into a battered °54 Chevy and races his rival buddy towards a high cliff. The first guy to junip out of his car before the cliff is the chicken. To impress his girl friend Emily, Bobby makes sure his pal bails out first and then tries to jmp out of his own car. Oops, no such luck and - over the cliff goes Bobby and his black leather jacket. Splat, crunch, munch and you guessed it, Bobby is a dead man. Almost. He wakes up on a subway head- ed for heaven where he is met by the best part of this whole silly flick. His new heavenly boss is Rafferty (Richard Milligan). Clad in a racy tweed-cap, tS goggles and hooded tout, Rafferty roars up to Bebby on an ancient custom ! bike and lays out the rules, Bobby jis stuck in mid- town and can’t get up-town (heaven) until he perferms a few small tasks for head- office. Until they assign him a job, the teen rebel must ride a subway along with civil war casualties and tired-looking vikings. To this point, The Heav- enly Kid works as a light comedy but when Bobby gets sent back to earth, things try to get serious. His | | assignments turns out to be a young kid called Lenny (Jason Gedrick). Lenny is a wimp and a “nerd. Bobby decides to teach him how to dress cool, look cool, and drive a cool °57 Chevy. To add some hot ‘drama to the plot, Lenny turns out to he the son of Bobby’s old gir! Emily (Jane Kaczmarek.) Its hard enough to take a plot like this for real but for an added not so surprising twist, Lenny also turns out to be Bobby’s son, born after Bobby tried flying his car. In case you are still temp- ted to see this movie, I won’t spoil the ending but I will tell you that the angel in leather and blue jeans finds Metro Theatre Don't Start Without’ Me- English comedy. Monday- Friday at 8:30 p.m., Saturdays at 6:30 and 9:30 p.m.; Thursday at 5:30 p.m, neaven a few changes from when he left earth. Bobby tries marijuana, stumbles into a gay bar and tries to figure out the mora!s of the 1980's. ‘‘There’s been a few changes,’’ he mutters wisely. A few changes in this film including more appearances of Rafferty and less attempts at drama might have been the director’s ticket to box- office heaven.
