BICYCLE SKILLS on the
road is the subject of a
two-hour program being
offered by the North Shore
Safety Council.

By the time a child reaches
Grade 4, he or she is pro-
bably using a bicycle on the
roads, says Council presi-
dent Stuart Lawson. Very
few, if any, have any traffic
concept or are aware of the
requirements of the law

restricted to young children.

In response to an initiative
by West Vancouver Council,
the NSSC is now sponsoring
the bicycle safety program in
elementary schools in West
Van. The program is based
on four traffic principles:

1. Riding on the right.

2. Right of way (looking
and yielding to traffic, stop

3. Shoulder checking
(looking behind before
acting).

4. Communicating with
other road users (hand
signals).

Instruction will take place
on the school ground and on
quiet, nearby residential
Streets in a real environment.

It is hoped to extend the
program to schools all over
the North Shore.
