A9 - Sunday, July 15, 1984 - North Shore News his, F ‘IN THIS campaign, all I ask anyone to do is take a look at the Liberal record, ask any, Liberal to defend that record, particularly the Iast four years, and then to make a choice.”’ - The speaker is Progressive Conservative MP for North Vancouver-Burnaby, Chuck Cook. He has held the seat for five years and is prepared to defend it once more against the Liberals, even with the formidable Iona Campagnolo as his op- ponent. Cook says he will cam- paign on his record over the past five years, pushing for specific riding issues such as — a major salmon’ enhance- ment program (‘‘i want salmon back in Indian Arm’’) and also for the establishment of a federal Marine park in either Granite Falls or the upper section of Indian Arm. He says he also has a con- tinuing interest in the in- dependence of the Port of Vancouver. ‘‘l’ve been able to make some changes, but not sufficient to give the Port true autonomy. No decisions for the Port of Vancouver should be made 4,000 miles away in Ot- tawa,’’ says Cook. ‘‘That’s one of the reasons we’ve slipped behind Seattle so much. And seeing as I have a third of the Port within this nding, it’s still of a con- tinuing and vital interest to me.”’ Also high on Cook’s list, and probably one of his leading concerns, is_ his desire to have a West Coast Ministry of Fisheries office established in Vancouver. It’s totally different from the East Coast fishery, it’s totally different from the inland fishery and darn it, it’s important enough to this province that we should have a West Coast Ministry of Fisheries. Or at the very least, a deputy Minister of Fisheries, West Coast, based in Vancouver, not tawa,’” he says. in Ot- CHUCK-COOK -. seeks third term Cook has been involved in pohtics since 1966, when he ran provincially in Alberta with Peter Lougheed. He was asked to run federally in 1968 but decided against it as he felt he could better provide for his family of two $4 38° records boys and baby daughter out of politics. He finally returned to the political field in the late 1970s when ‘‘] got so mad at what the Liberal government was doing and was asked (to run) again. I didn’t have any excuse this time. My daugh- ter was graduating from high school and the two boys already had their university educations.”’ Now a veteran in ‘‘perhaps one the most dif- ficult, trying and annoying jobs in the world,’? Cook has served as party whip and, prior to that appoint- ment, was heavily involved in ports legislation for Van- couver. ‘‘I fought that to a total standstill and made the government make some changes. I guess that’s one of my chief claims to fame,’’ says Cook. Other Cook achievements over the years have included work in the forestry sector, and serving on the Privileges and Elections Committee for three months in the ‘*psuedo-hearing on the Bryce Mackasey affair.’’ He says he was also in- strumental in having water lot leases altered from the Harbours Board, following the raising of lease fees. He worked towards a reduction of lease fees, which meant a difference of up to $10,000 for some companies. Cook says his job as party whip, while low profile, has ‘‘enabled me to come from the back benches to the front benches of Parliament, to sit on the Priorities and Plann- ing Committee which 1s The Bugs are Coming...
