Dear Editor: Your suggestion re use of the government's short term deposits to provide low- interest mortgages is scandalous. Government must govern and administer the province’s affairs for the benefit of all residents. To do that it must reduce its cash float to the smallest ossible amount and then it ust negotiate the highest possible rate of return on it. There’ is absolutely no Seniors Day ‘joy’ Dear Editor: At the risk of repeating myself, as I did last year, I would again like to give a huge vote of thanks to Shoppers Drug Mart Capilano Mall for their annual Sr. Citizens’ Day. A good many hours of planning and personnel must be in- volved; They deserved a lot of credit. So for the many Sr. Citizens like myself, 'm sure all agree it “made their day” and added an extra bit of joy to their lives, to know they’re remembered that one day. In appreciation, Joyce Cameron North Vancouver Put 50% down onh reason why 2,700 people should be given low rate mortgages at public expense and it would be irresponsible of government.to do so. Do you realize that while rates of interest are now twice what they were ten years ago, the Consumer Price Index-is two and a half times and the Composite Index of Industrial Earnings is more than two and a half times what they were ten years ago. That interest rates are the cause of the recession in the housing business is the biggest “big _lie” that we have had for years. The high cost of carrying a mortgage is due to the size of the mortgage required to cover the high cost of the house and the preposterously small down payments with which people are being allowed to “buy” houses — not the rate of interest. No one should be allowed Why does LGH hide salaries? Dear Editor: Why is it that, as a tax- payer, | am refused a copy of the Lions Gate Hospital budget. (I do not want the annual general report, I want the actual budget.) Why, when I asked for the budget was I given the third degree about who I am and why I want this budget? Why am I not allowed to know the salaries of administrators ? My taxes are paying their wages. To take this a step further, why is it that only the North Shore News will print letters giving another point of view on the restraint program? I notice NDP candidate David Shreck has his letters published regularly in the Vancouver press, I'm sure I'm not the only one writing in trying to present another point of view and if my letters are published, 75% is taken taken out! Somehow I have _ the feeling our freedom to know and our freedom of ex- pression are being seriously controlled and manipulated. Sue Cook North Vancouver Thanks to two Samaritians Dear Editor: I would appreciate using your newspaper to express my thanks to two young fellows who were “Samaritans” who cheerfully and courteously performed a very good deed. The other Saturday night, my duaghter-in-law and her two young daughters and myself went out for the evening as a treat to the girls to mark the close of their successful school year. Their mother had been loaned the use of a van from a relative for the cvening. They spent some time checking out different things without success. It was getting late for buses and neither of us had cnough moncy left for taxi fare. The two young fellows who were driving a Datsun kindly offered to drive us home. They refused to take any money for their trouble and said it was “their pleasure”. The financial disaster that the country and many of its citizens are* in today is due to the credit binge they have been on for fifteen years. Now it is time to get back to a _ cash economy in which respectable people simply do not mortgage their houses. Gordon McKee North Vancouver Pageant job well done To all sponsors, donors, 1982 Miss North Shore Pageant. I would like to convey my most heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you. Without you this pageant could not have been the success that it was, nor could it even have been possible. This pageant had seventeen of the loveliest young ladies, and the Narth Shore should be extremely proud to have young people like this participating in community affairs. The people who played host for the various functions deserve a special thank you and personal wish for prosperity, as you certainly deserve it. God bless you all. (Mrs.) Gerti Todd Association Coordinator Dear Editor: Getting to the roots of the business tax problem, sure, but why don't they do something in the municipal halls instead of blaming everybody else for their own incompetence. The way things were going, these big spenders thought there was a bottomless supply of money coming in forever and got a jolt when the provincial government put on the brakes. And since some. lefties have infiltrated councils and school boards, things have gone from bad to worse. And while one NV council member seems to have the answer to everything, who is going to pay for this all? We got already a $20 billion deficit; another $20 billion doesn’t seem to make any ‘difference to him. And as long as wages seem to go out of control and productivity is even declining at a faster rate, we don't need new manufac- turing plants. Or does he want to devaluate the Canadian dollar down to a dime to compete in the * world market? And for what do we need Classified | 986-6222 4 A7 - Sunday, July 11, 1982 - North Shore News _ another merchant marine? We are still suffering from the last one, finally disbanded in the fifties? We've got too many crown corporations and govern- ment institutions already, which only cost us money. We would be better off selling them. Just look at the recently created Crown corporation, “our post of- fice”; after the outrageous increase, they still muster a $600 million deficit. And I think the federal government hasn’t gone far enough with the 6%. They should have frozen wages for good. And have you ever heard big labour com- plaining about the interest they rake in for their own money, or have they ever offered financial help for low interest money to their members? S.
