To many, they portend a life restricted from then on. But recovery for heart attack victims is more and more possible’ with growing knowledge of this wonderful organ and _ its proper care. On the North Shore, everyone who has a heart attack and lives, is contacted by the Pump Primers. They are encouraged to par- ticipate in exercise classes if their doctor advises t. Pump Primers are enthusiastic about their programs. Most express the wish that everyone who has ever suffered a heart attack had access to classes such as those offered on the North Shore. “T just hope the hospital and the staff get full credit for what they've done.” said Bill Vagg, executive secretary of the Pump Primers and unofficial “greeter” at Lion's Gate Cardiac Class. “You're pretty down after a heart attack,” says Bill, SOME OF THE HAPPIEST Heart Fund volunteers are the North Shore Pump “and it’s good to. see someone who's been in the Same boat jumping around hke a gorilla!” “If someone is new, I just go up to them and tell them about us and give them the literature. They are usually feeling shy and reluctant to talk but the response 1s almost always wonderful.” Bill had been going to the exercise class on his doctor's advice for almost a_ year when he had his heart at- tack. “I had high blood pressure and he felt the class could lower the risk of a heart attack.” Primers. Happy they're here, because almost all have had heart attacks. The Pump Primers are a dedicated bunch, showing up for exercise classes at 7:30 in the mor- ning, three times a week at the YMCA. When asked about the Heart Fund project, Area Chairman Jan Goldie (front row, left) said, “We don't have projects. Most of us are happy to be raising funds for the Heart Foundation. But our biggest project is staying healthy!” Steam vaporizers recalled Owners of DeVilbiss vaporizers, models 1280, 1320 and 1450, should stop using them immediately because of a potential fire hazard according to the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). CSA has received six reports from consumers and fire departments of these ap- pliances failing with some resulting in vaporizer fires. No injuries have been reported. The vaporizers were sold across Canada between Oc- tober 1978 and July 1979. Although the original units met CSA standards and were certified, CSA's investigators later discovered poor inter- nal connections in the six vaporizers due to a manufac- turing defect. If you have a vaporizer which has the marking: DeVilbiss and No. 1280, 1320 or 1450 and CSA LR 42661, stop using it im- mediately and send it in fora replacement to: DeVilbiss (Canada) Ltd., P.O. Box 3000 Barrie, Ontario L4M 4C6 Bill sill had an attack but his doctor is convinced it could have been more semous had he not been exercising regularly. One such man is Irv Stewart. A massive coronary was followed by a month in hospital, six months slow progress with a visiting nurse at home, and then, just months after its creation, the cardiac class at Lion’s Gate. After a year-and-a-half there, Irv “graduated” to the YMCA program and_ has been there ever since. Three times a week, at 7:30 in the morning, Irv and others with heart trouble or people who are considered potential candidates for an attack work out for an hour.
