oars PART It took a. long’ time to: ‘raise | “anchor in the morning. Anchored in 90 feet..of water, in Montague Harbour, we: had about 300 feet of chain to bring in. The new anchor winch, while powerful, was very slow, and it was 90 degrees fahrenheit in the cockpit. The morning sun was _very-hot. By the time the anchor was up and. stowed the battery was almost flat, and I was glad _ for the spare. We motored way. to explore part of Saturna Island. There was no wind at all. The eight- under -the guidance of the mate. On the aft deck, Ellsworth got into what proved to.be a five-hour out- board-motor repair job. It was still very sunny and hot, but becoming overcast. The three-year-old and the eight-year-old were getting along very well.*The three-year-old. wanted from. a Montague’ Harbour; on our’ “off Saturna Island, in thirty feet of water. We put ,the dinghy in and Ellsworth took the repaired outboard motor out for a test. He and the eight-year-old floated around for quite a while, and I thought the ~starter pull cord would pull right out of the. engine. Finally they rowed back. to the vessel. “Back to the drawing board” grinned Ellsworth. “It’s a good thing we’re not’ ina rus everything that the eight . year-old had —a drink, a cookie, or a ride ‘in the dinghy. “Just like Glenn” he insisted. 1 By two o'clock we were anchored in a quiet little bay 1139 Lonsdale Avenue, North Vancouver, B.C. This large but shallow ~ bay empties into the Gulf of Georgia. We watched - driftwood and debris being sucked through the small pass, and stayed well clear of it with our balky engine, ‘engine. hovered right in the ~ - grasses, and seaweeds, and but - another dinghy with a ‘better pass for a while, riding on a _ current before it zoomed back into Winter Cove. ° Mount Baker made a’ white backdrop to the scene. . The bay. supports a lot of life. We saw lots of birds, we Saw many fish jump. In the- evening we sat in | the cockpit and had a round - of Spanish coffees and a good talk: The eight-year- . § old was asleep very late, by eleyen, but the three-year- old inexplicably was bright eyed and bushy tailed at midnight. The evening was very calm, the sea placid: there were many stars — the Milky Way was clear and distinct, and we talked about the mystery of it all. A log ‘salvage boat picked its way by us in the dark, using the spotlight to pick: out landmarks. Before we | went to sleep I used ours to check our position. The bright beam of light scared something large on a distant rock and it plunged into the water with a big splash, but I couldn't see what it was. Two adults and the eight- year-old slept on the. deck that night, and as I drifted off to sleep I could stil! hear them talking.
